Holding Space for Pregnancy Loss (HSPL) was created by Amy Wright Glenn, founder of the Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath, and Death. This workshop will compassionately and wisely prepare participants to more confidently and clearly hold space for one of life’s most painful and devastating losses. A second optional day will prepare participants to use special mind-body tools within their professional and personal practices.

HSPL is specifically geared toward Birth Doulas, Therapists, Nurses, Midwives, Ministers, OBGYNs, Fertility Specialists, Birth Photographers, Prenatal Yoga Teachers, Prenatal Massage Therapists, Funeral Home Directors, End-of-life Care Professionals, and Bereaved Parent Peer Supporters and Activists

On Day 1 Emily Gold will guide participants through a heartfelt analysis of three key components central to holding space for grieving mothers and their families.

  1. An introduction to the Companioning Model of Care outlined by Alan Wolfelt.

  2. An exploration of best "care practices” with regard to the various support networks surrounding bereaved mothers.

  3. A cross-cultural understanding of the healing power of ritual found

On Day 2 Emily will guide participants through specific mind-body activities to support individuals and families who have experienced pregnancy loss. This teaching is based on Emily’s own work as a Yoga Therapist and Pregnancy Loss doula. Previous yoga or meditation experience is helpful but not required. This day can only be taken by those who have completed the Holding Space for Pregnancy Loss Day one course through Emily, Amy or another HSPL Teacher.

"Those of us who devote our professional lives to holding space for birthing women know how heavy the shadow of 'not discussing it' can be. Silent, unprocessed grief from previous pregnancy loss can deeply impact the trajectory of a mother’s future pregnancy and childbirth experiences." -Amy Wright Glenn
